Wall Street Journal iPad App – The Full Print Experience

The Wall Street Journal is an app that took a long time to review, not because of any issues with the app, but rather the business model being pursued by the Wall Street Journal.  You see I am a subscriber to both the WSJ.com and the iPhone app. The thought of paying $18 per month on top of my $100 a year and the additional fee for the iPhone really made it hard to evaluate the app on its own merits.

There has been a lot of experimentation with newspaper content on the iPad, the obvious examples would be the New York Times Editors Choice and the WSJ app.  Whereas the Editor’s Choice app consists of curated content from the New York Times website, the Wall Street Journal iPad app is a full on replacement for the print edition.Upon loading the application you will be presented with the last seven days worth of WSJ content, along with options to read saved articles, saved sections and your stock portfolio.  I did find the loading of the daily edition somewhat slow and I hope this can be improved in future updates. Once you select a daily edition to read, you’re presented with a layout that is based to the print edition with featured content in the middle of the screen and secondary articles along the left and right columns.

Selected articles are broken up over several pages – it’s very reminiscent of reading a printed paper, except for the addition of slideshows and video, no doubt created to burnish the interactive features of the iPad. You can slide your finger left to right  to navigate between pages. On the right there is a secondary menu that lists all articles in a particular section, you can scroll this list to see all available articles. Sliding your finger from the top of the screen moves between sections. For example sliding down will shift from the front page section to the greater New York section. Moving your finger on the bottom to the top will move you from the Greater New York section to the Personal Journal. When using the application, one will be amazed at the sheer breadth of content, quality of the presentation in the layouts; this is as close to print as you possibly get on a interactive device.

The Wall Street Journal app is an in-depth experience, you can see that a lot of work has been done by the Dow Jones & Company developers to transfer the experience from print to digital without any compromises. At first I was really angry at the thought of paying another fee in addition to the print, iPhone, Web and iPad access. But now I can see that with the amount of quality content being created there must be some sort of cost, I only wish that there was a discount for Web and iPhone subscribers.
